Salim Mgala Mvurya serves as the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports. He took office on December 20, 2024, following his appointment by President William Samoei Ruto. In this role, he leads youth empowerment programs, national sports development, and the growth of the creative arts sector. Prior to this, he briefly served as the Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry in 2024, and as the Cabinet Secretary for Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs from 2022 to 2024. Before joining the Cabinet, Mvurya had a long career in devolved governance and local leadership. He was elected twice as the Governor of Kwale County, serving as its inaugural leader from 2013 to 2022. During his time as governor, he was elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG), helping shape policy and intergovernmental relations across Kenya's 47 counties. He is widely recognized for pioneering robust county-funded scholarship programs that expanded access to secondary and higher education. A dedicated development corporate executive before his political career, Mvurya spent over 17 years working with international non-governmental organizations. He held leadership roles at the Aga Khan Foundation, Plan International, and Intermediate Technology Development Group (now Practical Action). His work focused on community-driven development, health initiatives, education projects, and clean water access across East Africa. Mvurya holds a Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness Management from Egerton University. He also earned a Master of Arts in Participation, Power and Social Change from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he holds certificates in collaborative governance and leadership from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
