About
Raila Amolo Odinga was a Kenyan politician and legislator who served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 17 April 2008 to 9 April 2013. He died of cardiac arrest on 15 October 2025 in Kochi, India, while receiving medical treatment. Born on 7 January 1945 in Maseno, he was the son of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first Vice-President, and Mary Juma Odinga. He attended Kisumu Union Primary School, Maranda Primary School, and Maranda High School in Siaya County. In 1962, he travelled to East Germany to study German at the Herder Institute in Leipzig, followed by technical studies in Magdeburg. He graduated in 1970 with a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, equivalent to a Master’s degree, from the Technical University in Magdeburg. Upon returning to Kenya, Mr Odinga worked as a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nairobi until 1974. He subsequently joined the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), where he served as Group Standards Manager and was promoted to Deputy Director in 1978. Mr Odinga became actively involved in pro-democracy movements during the 1970s and 1980s, opposing the one-party state under President Daniel Arap Moi. In 1982, he was accused of involvement in a failed coup attempt and was imprisoned without trial until 1988. He faced further detentions in the late 1980s and early 1990s before seeking political asylum in Norway in 1991. He returned to Kenya in 1992 and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Lang’ata Constituency under the Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD–K). Following internal party changes, he joined the National Development Party (NDP) and stood as its presidential candidate in 1997, retaining his parliamentary seat. In 2001, he was appointed Minister for Energy. Following the 2002 general election, he helped form the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) government and served as Minister for Roads, Public Works and Housing from 2003 to 2005. Mr Odinga contested the presidency five times, in 1997, 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022. The disputed outcome of the 2007 election led to widespread unrest, which was resolved through international mediation led by former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. This resulted in a power-sharing agreement, and Mr Odinga was appointed Prime Minister in April 2008, serving until the position was abolished under the 2010 Constitution. He subsequently served as the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and led various political coalitions, including CORD, NASA, and Azimio la Umoja. He also served as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development. He was married to Ida Odinga (née Anyango Oyoo), and they had four children: The late Fidel, Rosemary, Raila Jr, and Winnie.
