About
Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen serves as the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration. He took office on December 20, 2024, following his appointment by President William Samoei Ruto. In this role, he leads national security, internal state functions, and public administration. Prior to this, he briefly served as the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports in 2024, and as the Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport and Public Works from 2022 to 2024. Before joining the Cabinet, Murkomen had a long career in legislative politics. He was elected three times as the Senator for Elgeyo Marakwet County and rose to become the Senate Majority Leader. He was the inaugural chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Devolution and Intergovernmental Relations, helping implement Kenya’s devolved system of governance. He also sponsored major laws, including the Urban Areas and Cities Amendment Bill (2017) and the Food Security Bill (2017). An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Murkomen holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi and a Postgraduate Diploma from the Kenya School of Law. He also earned two Master of Laws degrees from American University in Washington, D.C., and the University of Pretoria in South Africa. He has lectured at the University of Nairobi, Moi University, and the Catholic University of Eastern Africa.
