About
Mutula Kilonzo Senior was a Kenyan politician and senior counsel who served as the first senator for Makueni County from March 2013 until his death in April 2013. During his political career, he held various positions in the national government under President Mwai Kibaki, including minister for education from 2012 to 2013, minister for justice, national cohesion and constitutional affairs from 2009 to 2012, and minister for metropolitan development from 2008 to 2009. Before his appointments in the grand coalition cabinet, his legislative career began in 2003 when he was selected as a nominated member of parliament representing the Kenya African National Union party. During this period in the National Assembly, he served as the shadow minister for justice and constitutional affairs. He also contributed to the drafting of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya through his role as a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Constitutional Review. Kilonzo was born on 2 July 1948 in Mbooni, located in Makueni County. He attended Mbooni Primary School and Machakos School for his secondary education. He graduated with a first-class bachelor of laws degree from the University of Dar es Salaam in 1974. Professionally, he was a constitutional lawyer and became an advocate of the High Court of Kenya. He established his private legal practice, Mutula Kilonzo and Company Advocates, in 1975 and served as the chairperson of the Law Society of Kenya from 1982 to 1984.
