About
Deborah Mulongo Barasa is the cabinet secretary for environment, climate change and forestry. She was reassigned to the docket by President William Ruto in March 2025 to steer national policy on forest conservation, climate adaptation, and environmental governance. Previously, she served as the cabinet secretary for health from August 2024 until her deployment to the environment ministry. Before her cabinet career, Barasa worked for nearly two decades as an internal medicine physician, consultant internist, and public health specialist. She served as an infectious diseases consultant at the World Health Organization (WHO) Africa Hub, advising member states in eastern and southern Africa on healthcare systems and strategic programming. She also held senior clinical positions at the Mater Hospital in Nairobi.
