National Treasury
The National Treasury and Economic Planning is responsible for formulating and implementing national financial and economic policies to ensure sustainable development and effective management of public resources.
What the ministry does
The ministry manages the country’s financial affairs and coordinates economic planning. Its main responsibilities include:
- Budget Formulation: Preparing the annual National Budget and coordinating the allocation of funds to all government ministries and state agencies.
- Economic Planning: Formulating long-term and short-term economic development plans, including the coordination of the Vision 2030 strategy.
- Public Debt Management: Managing the national debt portfolio to ensure fiscal sustainability and borrowing at minimum cost.
- Resource Mobilization: Coordinating the collection of national revenue through the Kenya Revenue Authority and managing external financial assistance.
- Public Procurement Regulation: Developing and overseeing policies that govern how the government buys goods and services to ensure value for money.
- Financial Oversight: Managing the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) to track government spending and prevent corruption.
- Economic Policy Research: Conducting research on fiscal and monetary trends to advise the government on inflation, interest rates, and growth.
