Ministry of Roads and Transport

The Ministry of Roads and Transport is responsible for national policies and programmes that develop and sustain world-class transport infrastructure and services to drive Kenya’s socio-economic development.

What the ministry does
The ministry manages the planning, development, and maintenance of the country’s physical infrastructure and transport systems. Its main responsibilities include:

  • Road Network Management: Overseeing the development, rehabilitation, and maintenance of all public roads through agencies like KeNHA, KURA, and KeRRA.
  • Aviation and Aerospace: Formulating policies and regulations for the air transport industry and managing the modernization of airports and airstrips.
  • Maritime and Shipping Affairs: Developing maritime transport policies and monitoring port development, including oversight of the Kenya Ports Authority.
  • Railway Development: Coordinating the planning and investment of the railway sub-sector, including the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway.
  • Transport Safety and Regulation: Developing regulations for road transport operations and overseeing safety standards through the National Transport and Safety Authority.
  • Infrastructure Research: Conducting materials testing and research to set geometric and pavement design standards for national infrastructure projects.
  • Mechanical and Transport Services: Providing mechanical services and managing the government’s transport fleet and axle load control enforcement.
