Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy

The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy is responsible for national policies and programmes that facilitate the development of the information and communications sector and the growth of Kenya’s digital economy.

What the ministry does
The ministry manages the country’s ICT infrastructure and communication systems. Its main responsibilities include:

  • Digital Infrastructure Development: Overseeing the expansion of the National Optic Fibre Backbone Infrastructure to enhance internet connectivity across the country.
  • Digital Economy Promotion: Driving the "Digital Superhighway" project to create jobs, support e-commerce, and digitize government services.
  • Information Management: Coordinating government communications and public information through the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation and the Kenya News Agency.
  • Postal and Courier Services: Formulating policies for the postal sector and overseeing the modernization of the Postal Corporation of Kenya.
  • Telecommunications Regulation: Developing policies that guide the telecommunications industry, including mobile services and broadband access.
  • Cybersecurity and Data Privacy: Creating frameworks to protect the country’s digital space and ensure the security of citizen data.
  • Digital Literacy: Implementing programmes to equip citizens with digital skills and promoting the establishment of digital hubs in every ward.
