What the ministry does
The ministry manages the national health system and coordinates healthcare services across the country. Its main responsibilities include:
- Policy Formulation: Developing national health policies, strategies, and standards to guide the delivery of healthcare services in both public and private sectors.
- Health Regulation: Overseeing the regulation of health professionals, medical products, and healthcare facilities through various regulatory boards and councils.
- Preventive Healthcare: Coordinating national programmes for immunization, nutrition, maternal and child health, and the control of communicable and non-communicable diseases.
- National Referral Services: Managing national referral hospitals like Kenyatta National Hospital and Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital to provide specialized medical care.
- Medical Supplies Management: Overseeing the procurement and distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies through the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority.
- Universal Health Coverage: Driving the implementation of Universal Health Coverage to ensure all citizens can access essential health services without financial hardship.
- Health Research: Supporting and coordinating medical research and development through institutions like the Kenya Medical Research Institute.
