The Ministry of Education (MoE) is responsible for national policies and programmes that help Kenyans access quality education, research, and training.What the ministry doesThe ministry manages the education system from early childhood through to university. Its main responsibilities include:
- setting standards: creating national education policies and ensuring schools meet safety and quality rules
- curriculum development: ensuring what students learn through the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development is relevant to the modern workforce
- funding education: sending money directly to public schools and managing student loans through the Higher Education Loans Board
- managing examinations: overseeing student assessment and certification through the Kenya National Examinations Council
- regulating institutions: registering new schools and granting official charters to universities
Why the ministry existsThe ministry exists to protect the constitutional right to education for all citizens. It focuses on:
- equity: making sure children from disadvantaged backgrounds or those with disabilities have the same opportunities as others
- national development: training a skilled workforce to drive the country’s economy
- quality assurance: ensuring that certificates from Kenyan institutions are recognized and respected internationally
The ministry is divided into several departments, including Basic Education, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and Higher Education and Research.
