The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is responsible for national policies and programmes that safeguard Kenya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
What the ministry does
The ministry facilitates and supports the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in discharging their constitutional mandate. Its main responsibilities include:
- National Defence: Overseeing the three primary services—the Kenya Army, Kenya Air Force, and Kenya Navy—to protect the country against external aggression.
- Civil Authority Support: Providing assistance and cooperation with other national authorities in situations of emergency or disaster, as well as restoring peace in parts of Kenya affected by unrest.
- Military Administration: Managing the recruitment, training, and welfare of both military personnel and civilian staff within the defence establishment.
- Regional Peacekeeping: Coordinating Kenya’s participation in international and regional peacekeeping missions under the African Union and the United Nations.
- Strategic Policy: Formulating defence policies and strategies that align with national security goals and international obligations.
- Defence Education: Overseeing specialized learning and research through institutions like the National Defence University-Kenya.
