Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development (MoALD) is responsible for national policies and programmes that help Kenyans access food security, sustainable agricultural practices, and livestock management.

What the ministry does
The ministry manages the agricultural and livestock sectors to drive economic growth and rural development. Its main responsibilities include:

  • Food Security Management: Developing and implementing national food policies and managing strategic food reserves to ensure all Kenyans have access to quality food.
  • Livestock Development: Overseeing animal husbandry, promoting the dairy and bee-keeping industries, and managing livestock insurance and marketing.
  • Agricultural Research: Supporting research through institutions like the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) to promote modern farming technologies.
  • Veterinary Services: Managing animal disease control, veterinary laboratories, and the regulation of veterinary medicines to ensure healthy livestock.
  • Extension Services: Coordinating agricultural extension programmes and training to provide farmers and pastoralists with technical knowledge and support.
  • Regulation and Quality Control: Regulating the quality of agricultural inputs (like seeds and fertilizers) and produce to ensure they meet national and international standards.

The ministry exists to transform the agricultural sector into a commercially oriented and competitive industry. It focuses on:

  • Nutrition Security: Ensuring the country achieves 100% food and nutrition security for its population.
  • Economic Growth: Enhancing foreign exchange earnings through agribusiness and creating employment and wealth for rural communities.
  • Sustainability: Promoting climate-smart agriculture and sustainable land resource management to mitigate the effects of climate change.
  • Livelihood Improvement: Empowering small-scale farmers and pastoralists to transition from subsistence to commercial farming.

The ministry is organized into the State Department for Agriculture and the State Department for Livestock Development.
